Micro Com Systems, a Vancouver document management firm, has reached a significant milestone of 50 years in business, tracing its journey from a small computer output microfilm service to a comprehensive digital document scanning enterprise.
Founded in 1975 on Powell Street, the company initially focused on Computer Output Microfilm (COM), helping organizations reduce processing time and paper distribution costs. Throughout the decades, Micro Com has adapted to technological shifts, expanding its services from traditional micrographic offerings to advanced digital scanning solutions.
Key transitions included a 1992 ownership change that sparked digital service expansions, including document scanning, large format scanning, and specialized services like microfilm and aperture card digitization. The company relocated to a four-story building in Vancouver's Mount Pleasant neighborhood, growing to occupy nearly 22,000 square feet.
Under current owner Craig Hollingum, Micro Com has continued to evolve, offering services such as document imaging, medical imaging, optical character recognition (OCR), and enterprise report management. The company's longevity demonstrates its ability to navigate technological disruptions and meet changing business documentation needs.
Micro Com's 50-year trajectory reflects broader technological transformations in record-keeping, from physical microfilm to digital archives, showcasing how adaptive businesses can thrive through continuous innovation and service diversification.
