Veteran Firearms Instructor Rick Billington Launches Nationwide Initiative Promoting Responsible Gun Ownership

Veteran firearms instructor and author Rick Billington is launching a national educational initiative designed to shift the conversation around firearms from politics to personal responsibility. The initiative includes the release of his new book The Responsible Gun Owner and a six-part educational blog series titled The Responsible Gun Owner Series, beginning July 12, 2026.

Billington, founder of Michigan Pistol Academy, argues that the national dialogue often neglects the deeper responsibilities of firearm ownership. 'Far too much of the conversation around firearms focuses exclusively on the weapon itself,' he said. 'Very little attention is given to the responsibility, judgment, and decision-making that ultimately determine whether a firearm owner is truly prepared.'

The book explores preparedness, personal accountability, emotional discipline, conflict avoidance, legal understanding, and decision-making under stress. The blog series expands on these themes, with volumes addressing mindset versus marksmanship, self-defense law, conflict avoidance, home defense planning, decision-making under stress, and emotional control.

Billington, who brings decades of law enforcement and civilian firearms education experience, emphasizes that technical shooting skills alone are insufficient. 'The responsible gun owner should never view a firearm as the first answer to conflict,' he explained. 'The goal of proper training is not simply becoming proficient with a firearm. It is learning judgment, emotional discipline, conflict avoidance, and understanding when force should never become necessary.'

The initiative challenges misconceptions by focusing on mental, legal, emotional, and decision-making responsibilities. Billington believes many firearm owners unknowingly place themselves at risk by prioritizing marksmanship over broader responsibilities. The campaign is hosted through Michigan Pistol Academy, providing new and experienced owners with a framework extending beyond conventional instruction.

The series will be available weekly throughout the summer on the Michigan Pistol Academy educational platform. The book is available on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing.
