Virtual Car Seat Installation Service Addresses Widespread Safety Concern

The alarming reality that three out of four car seats on American roads are installed incorrectly has prompted the launch of a new virtual service designed to help parents and caregivers ensure proper installation. This free online platform allows users to schedule confidential virtual meetings with specially trained safety experts who can provide guidance on choosing and correctly using the appropriate car seat or booster seat for their child.

Parents like Ana, who is expecting a baby in the spring, recognize both the complexity of car seat installation and its critical importance. "I know how difficult it can be to install a car seat, but I also understand how important it is to know how to do it correctly," Ana said. "Utilizing this virtual service with my cell phone, having a safety expert assist me from my home, is a tremendous service. And it gives me great peace of mind."

The service is made possible by a grant from Buckle Up for Life to the National Safety Council. Gloria Del Castillo, senior specialist of community engagement for Buckle Up for Life, emphasized the program's accessibility. "We all know installing a car seat can be difficult," Del Castillo said. "So, it is important that parents and caregivers aren't shy about asking for help. But they often don't know where to turn to get that help. With this program, parents can meet with experts at their convenience and make sure their children's seats are installed correctly."

Buckle Up for Life, a child passenger safety education program created by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and Toyota, works in communities nationwide and checks thousands of car seats annually. The program addresses a critical safety concern, as motor vehicle crashes remain one of the leading causes of unintentional child deaths in the United States.

Rosana Rivera, a child passenger safety technician with NSC, described the virtual platform as transformative for child safety. "No matter where you live and regardless of your schedule, this platform allows you to meet with an expert, have them view your car seat and get guidance on proper installation," Rivera said. "After all, every parent deserves to have the confidence of knowing they are doing all they can to help keep their children safe."

The service eliminates geographical and scheduling barriers that previously prevented many families from accessing professional car seat installation assistance. Parents and caregivers can schedule appointments at times convenient for them and receive expert guidance directly in their driveways using their mobile devices. Those interested in scheduling a virtual car seat check can visit safety-connection.org to access the free service.
