Wrap Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: WRAP) has announced a strategic transaction with Israeli AI-sensing company Frenel Imaging Ltd., securing exclusive United States and NATO distribution rights to a physics-based imaging technology designed to detect drones that have learned to operate silently. The technology will serve as the perception core of WrapShield, the company's new counter-unmanned aircraft systems (counter-UAS) and autonomous public-safety platform.
The announcement comes amid a growing recognition that traditional public-safety infrastructure is no longer adequate to address the evolving threat posed by commercial drones. According to the company, commercial drones that once required nation-state budgets can now be purchased off a consumer shelf for under $500, and criminal organizations are increasingly deploying them against border law enforcement, correctional facilities, and even military installations. Langley Air Force Base, one of the most secure military installations in the United States, was forced to halt flight operations due to repeated drone incursions for which no adequate nonlethal response protocol existed.
Wrap Technologies' new capability addresses a critical gap: the ability to detect drones that have learned to go silent. The Frenel Imaging technology is physics-based and enables earlier threat detection, orchestrates a response, and acts with proportionate, mission-appropriate action. While counter-UAS is the entry point, the platform has room to grow beyond that, with a market spanning domestic law enforcement, allied militaries, and critical infrastructure across every NATO nation.
The defense-technology sector has drawn investor attention to companies such as AeroVironment Inc. (NASDAQ: AVAV), Kratos Defense & Security Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ: KTOS), Ondas Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: ONDS), and Red Cat Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: RCAT). Wrap Technologies' move positions it to compete in this space by offering a detection capability that competitors cannot buy.
"The safety-response infrastructure the world was built on is no longer adequate for the threat environment it faces," the company stated. "That gap is the defining public-safety challenge of this decade." The integration of Frenel Imaging's technology into WrapShield aims to close that gap, providing law enforcement and military commands with a tool to detect and respond to drone threats that have previously evaded standard countermeasures.
