A rare female-led Zen monastery in Sugar Land, Texas, is offering a transformative meditation retreat for youth, addressing growing concerns about mental health and emotional resilience among younger generations. Universal Door Meditation Center, led by Awakened Zen Master Thich Dieu Thien, will host two five-day summer retreats designed to help teenagers develop inner peace and emotional clarity.
The Youth & Teen Awakened Meditation Summer Retreat, scheduled for June 16–20 and July 21–25, provides participants aged 10-18 an opportunity to learn meditation techniques that help liberate themselves from anxiety, stress, and performance pressures. The retreat offers a technology-free environment where young people can explore mindfulness and reconnect with their innate capacity for meaningful living.
Unlike typical wellness programs, this monastery emphasizes a holistic approach to meditation, treating every action—from walking to dishwashing—as a potential pathway to spiritual awareness. Zen Master Thich Dieu Thien, recognized by her students as a modern-day living Buddha, guides participants toward what she describes as the 'Unborn Mind,' a state of clear, awakened presence unencumbered by external stressors.
The retreat's significance extends beyond individual transformation. As mental health challenges increasingly impact younger generations, such programs offer alternative approaches to building emotional resilience. By providing a structured yet nurturing environment, the meditation center addresses the growing need for authentic, meaningful strategies to support youth mental wellness.
In addition to the youth retreat, the center will also host a public event on International Yoga Day, June 21, 2025, offering broader community access to their unique meditative practices. The event represents an opportunity for individuals of all experience levels to engage with the center's distinctive approach to spiritual development.
