If you haven’t heard, some interesting news came out of the Workday Rising conference on Tuesday. Workday and IBM have formed a partnership that will make two of IBM’s artificial intelligence capabilities—Match Score and Requisition Prioritization—available in the Workday Recruiting solution.
Match Score and Requisition Prioritization are part of IBM’s Watson Recruitment Express. Match Score assigns each active candidate a match score, which is calculated by comparing the candidate’s skill score to a requisition’s skill requirements. Requisition Prioritization, meanwhile, automatically assigns a priority value (High, Medium, or Low) to requisitions to tell recruiters which reqs they really need to get moving on.
So why is this interesting? Simply that Workday was in the market for an AI provider, and chose IBM Watson. Like anyone watching the HR technology space, we’ve noticed the proliferation of AI solutions over the last two to three years. HR and recruiting tech providers need AI capabilities to be competitive today. At the same time, not every HR technology company is going to want to or have the resources to develop or acquire AI. Many are going to instead partner with companies providing AI. That’s the path Workday—obviously one of the biggest and highest-profile companies in the industry—seems to have chosen. And the solution it chose is IBM Watson. And it’s not the only HR tech company to make that choice. Greenhouse announced its own partnership with IBM Watson Talent last month around IBM Watson Candidate Assistant.
The takeaway we have is that in their evaluation of AI partners, Workday and Greenhouse concluded that IBM was the best—they decided that Watson will give them the best ability to satisfy and retain current customers and to attract and acquire new customers.
IBM, of course, is no newcomer to AI, its introduction dates back in 2011. And since then Watson has proliferated—it’s used everywhere from HR departments to healthcare to even major tennis tournaments including the U.S. Open and Wimbledon. It’s seemingly everywhere. You may have seen commercials on TV. So you can say these partnerships with Workday and Greenhouse are a sign of the future and the ever-increasing importance of AI in HR.
