It’s Friday afternoon. A beautiful sunny day in Santa Cruz. I’d love to be on the beach across from our office (yeah, we have cool office space). I can hear the surf and I think it’s mocking me. I’ve been staring into a computer screen since daybreak preparing for a new release of HRmarketer’s Get it Done! Social software.
Phone rings. I’m alone in the office (everyone else must be at the beach) and I’m looking for a break so I pick up.
“Hi, this is Garrett from AMAZING COMPANY.”
“Hey Garrett, this is Mark. What’s up?”
Garret, the founder of this amazingly cool company somewhere in the Northeast needs marketing and PR help for his business. BTW – this isn’t some start-up. Garrett’s company is well established and sells product all over the world. And it’s really cool, innovative stuff. I’ve seen his products around Santa Cruz.
But this amazingly cool company has nothing to with HR. They manufacture and sell an outdoor/recreation type product to consumers.
There is nothing HRmarketer does that can possibly help this guy.
“Why the heck are you calling us, Garrett?”, I ask.
Turns out, Garrett stumbled upon a comment I made on some article about PR. He liked what I had to say. Told me that I came across as believable, honest and knowledgeable about PR. So he reached out.
Garrett and I spoke for a while. It was fun. I learned about his business, his challenges and frustrations. We shared some stories. I gave him some marketing ideas. Told him how to tell if a PR agency is legit. And then I referred him to a friend of mine that runs a marketing company that was better suited to help him.
I hung up the phone and it occurred to me……

Comment. Phone Call. New Business Friend. Yes #SocialMediaWorks
That I had a new and interesting business friend. All because of a comment I made on some article/blog some time ago. Wow. And if our company had been able to help him we’d probably have a new customer.
This was gratifying and validating to me because I spend a lot of time telling people how important it is to comment on content. And we’ve built software (Get it Done! Social) that helps companies find relevant commenting opportunities and be better at social.
Very cool. Made my day.
Now, back to work. I’m re-energized.
Oh – here are some blogs I’ve recently posted that relate to commenting on social.
