Safety Systems Management (SSM) has announced the installation of 25 mobile communications towers at The New Terminal One at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), marking a significant advancement in construction site safety. These towers, operational during the construction phase, are designed to provide immediate audio/visual alerts and mass messaging capabilities in emergencies, ensuring the safety and security of over 3,000 personnel involved in the project.
The systems, installed across Phase A of the project covering 1.8-million square feet, represent a leap forward from traditional air horn alerts. They are capable of addressing a wide range of safety-related events, including fires, medical emergencies, hazardous material spills, and even daily safety messages. The collaboration with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey underscores the importance of integrating cutting-edge safety technologies in large-scale construction projects.
At the core of this system is a base station located in the medical trailer, functioning as the central command center. It enables the site safety team to control an LED sign board for instant messaging and use a dedicated emergency handset for broadcasting urgent messages. Additionally, each of the 25 communication towers is equipped with a pull pendant, allowing any worker to trigger an alert, which then sends a text to safety personnel for immediate action.
Joe Schwed, The New Terminal One's Head of Health, Safety, and Wellbeing, highlighted the system's role in setting a new safety standard for construction projects. The terminal, part of a $19-billion transformation of JFK Airport, aims to be among the world's top airport terminals upon completion in 2030.
