Annovis Bio Inc. (NYSE: ANVS) announced the promotion of Cheng Fang, Ph.D., to chief scientific officer, effective immediately. Fang, who joined the company in 2021 and most recently served as senior vice president of research and development, will oversee scientific strategy and research operations across Annovis’ Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) programs. His responsibilities include translational science, clinical development, biomarker strategy, and regulatory interactions.
The promotion comes at a critical juncture for the Malvern, Pennsylvania-based biotechnology company. Annovis is advancing its lead drug candidate, buntanetap, toward top-line data from its pivotal Phase 3 Alzheimer’s disease study, followed by a New Drug Application (NDA) submission to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. According to the company, Fang has played a key role in advancing Annovis’ clinical development efforts and will now lead its scientific strategy through these upcoming clinical and regulatory milestones.
Buntanetap (formerly posiphen) is an investigational once-daily oral therapy designed to inhibit the translation of multiple neurotoxic proteins, including APP and amyloid beta, tau, alpha-synuclein, and TDP-43, through a specific RNA-targeting mechanism of action. By addressing the underlying causes of neurodegeneration, Annovis aims to halt disease progression and improve cognitive and motor functions in patients. The drug is being developed for both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
Annovis Bio is a Phase 3 clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on developing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases. The company’s lead candidate, buntanetap, targets multiple toxic proteins implicated in AD and PD. With Fang’s promotion, Annovis is positioning itself to navigate the complex regulatory landscape and deliver on its clinical promises.
