The Atlanta Community Food Bank, one of the nation's largest food banks, is mobilizing community action during September's Hunger Action Month as food insecurity reaches its highest rate in over a decade, affecting over 47 million Americans including 14 million children. In Georgia specifically, 1 in 7 people and 1 in 5 children face food insecurity, creating an urgent need for collective response.
Recent federal legislation has created additional challenges, with the largest cuts to SNAP and Medicaid in history now signed into law, making food and healthcare increasingly inaccessible for millions. Kyle Waide, President & CEO of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, emphasized the critical timing, stating that recent federal program cuts are significantly impacting services and increasing strain on programs serving children, families, and seniors.
The Food Bank has launched multiple initiatives to engage the community. Throughout September, donations to the organization will be matched dollar for dollar up to $100,000, with each dollar providing up to 6 meals. Donations can be made directly through their website to maximize impact.
The campaign encourages public participation through several channels. Supporters are asked to wear orange, the color representing hunger awareness, throughout the month. On September 9, designated as Hunger Action Day, iconic Atlanta landmarks including 1105 West Peachtree Tower, Atlanta Zoo, and Ponce City Market will illuminate their buildings orange in solidarity.
The organization is also running a 30-day social media challenge offering daily action suggestions and encouraging volunteer participation at their headquarters or Community Food Center locations. The initiative is part of a nationwide effort by Feeding America member food banks, with supporters encouraged to use #HungerActionMonth and tag @FeedingAmerica and @ACFB on social media platforms.

The Atlanta Community Food Bank, which distributed its one billionth meal in 2023, works through more than 700 community-based nonprofit partners across 29 counties to provide nutritious food to thousands of families annually.
