Bastei Lubbe AG, the Cologne-based general-interest publishing group listed in the Prime Standard of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (ISIN DE000A1X3YY0), said profitability improved sharply in the second quarter of its 2026/2027 financial year even as revenues slipped, according to NEWMEDIAWIRE.
The company reported Group revenues of EUR 55.2 million for the April-to-September half-year period, slightly below the prior-year figure. Group EBIT came in at EUR 3.7 million, an EBIT margin of 6.6 percent. The headline number was the second-quarter margin, which widened to 8.4 percent from 4.4 percent in the previous quarter.
Bastei Lubbe attributed the revenue decline to the absence of top-selling blockbuster titles that lifted the comparable period a year earlier, compounded by a continued downward trend in the German book market. The "Book" segment generated revenues of EUR 51.6 million, down from EUR 53.4 million, with segment EBIT of EUR 3.2 million versus EUR 5.4 million a year earlier. The "Novel Booklets" segment posted revenues of EUR 3.5 million, against EUR 3.6 million, and segment EBIT of EUR 0.4 million, down from EUR 0.5 million.
Chief Executive Officer Soheil Dastyari framed the margin gain as evidence of durability in a difficult climate, calling it "a strong sign of our business resilience and a further important step on our path to sustainable growth." That resilience matters for readers and investors alike: it signals that cost discipline, rather than market recovery, is currently doing the heavy lifting for the publisher's earnings.
Cost of materials fell to EUR 29.1 million from EUR 29.9 million, reflecting the revenue performance and product mix as well as adjustments to production costs that the company says will show further impact in coming quarters. Personnel expenses rose to EUR 11.9 million from EUR 11.2 million, mainly on changes to the salary structure. Earnings before taxes were EUR 3.6 million, down from EUR 5.8 million, and consolidated net profit attributable to shareholders was EUR 2.4 million, or EUR 0.18 per share, against EUR 3.9 million and EUR 0.30 a year earlier.
The publisher said it confirmed market leadership in key segments including Young Adult, New Adult and Community Editions. Community-driven business models accounted for 27 percent of revenues, nearly unchanged from 28 percent, while digital products made up 32 percent, down from 34 percent. Total assets rose to EUR 113.1 million from EUR 109.0 million at the end of March 2026, largely on higher author advances, while equity attributable to parent shareholders fell EUR 0.9 million to EUR 64.8 million after a EUR 3.3 million dividend distribution.
The results carry implications beyond one balance sheet. Bastei Lubbe is trimming its outlook, now expecting Group revenues of EUR 114 to 118 million and Group EBIT of EUR 9 to 11 million for 2026/2027, against earlier guidance of EUR 118 to 122 million and EUR 10 to 12 million. Management said the cost adjustments already initiated are being stepped up so that EBIT remains stable or rises despite lower revenues.
There are growth bets in the pipeline. At the Frankfurt Book Fair in early October 2026, the company hosted authors on its own stage for the first time and saw numerous titles sell out. It also announced a new imprint, LIV, launching next spring with romance novels aimed at readers in their late twenties and older, building on LYX and New Adult. In New Adult, where Bastei Lubbe remains market leader, the market is consolidating, which the company expects to improve earnings in the medium term.
