The Big Sky Skijoring Association (BSSJ) is preparing for its 7th Annual Best in the West Showdown, a thrilling winter sports competition that highlights the unique Montana tradition of skijoring. Scheduled from February 7 to 9, 2025, at the Big Sky Town Center, the event promises to attract top teams from across North America and draw thousands of spectators.
Skijoring, a dynamic sport combining skiing or snowboarding with horseback riding, has deep cultural roots in Montana. The Best in the West Showdown has emerged as a premier event in the skijoring circuit, featuring innovative course design and mountain culture elements that set it apart from traditional competitions.
The event will showcase 154 skijoring teams competing across multiple divisions, including Novice, Junior, Pro Snowboard, Switcharoo, Sport Ski, and Open Ski categories. Participants will vie for a substantial $15,000 prize purse, adding significant competitive stakes to the event.
Beyond the races, spectators can expect additional entertainment, including freestyle snowmobile, ski, and snowboard exhibitions. The renowned Keith Sayers FMX snowmobile team and the Entourage ski crew will perform during intermissions, alongside guest professional snowboarders and skiers.
Ticket prices range from $10 to $45 for full weekend passes, with special discounts available for local Big Sky workers. The event will feature a vendor village with firepits, local food and beverage options, western and ski retail brands, and will conclude with awards, live music, and an after-party.
