Blue Faery is continuing its critical health awareness initiative targeting liver cancer risks within Black/African American communities through its Love Your Liver campaign. The program highlights significant health disparities and provides educational resources to improve early detection and management of liver-related diseases.
The campaign features two free virtual educational workshops featuring prominent medical experts. The first workshop on February 3, 2025, will be led by Dr. Cristal Brown, a gastroenterologist and transplant hepatologist from UT Health Austin. The second workshop on February 28, 2025, will feature Dr. Lewis Roberts, a gastroenterologist and liver cancer researcher from the Mayo Clinic.
Black/African Americans face substantially higher risks of developing liver cancer, with statistics showing they are 1.5 times more likely to develop the disease compared to other populations. Key risk factors include type 2 diabetes and hepatitis C, making education and early detection critical for improving survival rates.
Dr. Brown emphasized the importance of understanding health disparities, stating, "Health disparities exist for many diseases, such as liver cancer. Understanding the risk factors and connecting patients with the appropriate healthcare is very important to me."
Through its comprehensive approach, Blue Faery provides patients and caregivers with resources including online community support and patient education guides, demonstrating a commitment to addressing liver cancer through research, education, and advocacy.
