Blue Faery: The Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Association will host a free online workshop titled "Love Your Liver" for Black History Month on February 5 at 7 PM ET. The event specifically addresses liver cancer prevention, early detection, and access to care within Black and African American communities, which face significantly higher rates of disease and systemic barriers to treatment compared to other groups.
Primary liver cancer incidence is increasing across the United States, with Black patients experiencing earlier disease onset, higher mortality rates, and more frequent delayed diagnoses. The workshop directly confronts these health inequities by providing attendees with practical tools to advocate for screening, implement lifestyle changes, and secure medical support before symptoms become severe. This initiative is particularly important as it empowers communities disproportionately affected by a disease that often goes undetected until advanced stages.
The event will feature Dr. Rebecca Jones, Ph.D., Faculty Associate at the Institute for Health Promotion Research at UT Health San Antonio, who will lead an interactive discussion. Participants will learn to recognize symptoms, understand risk factors, and navigate healthcare systems more effectively. The program welcomes patients, caregivers, medical professionals, and community leaders interested in understanding how liver cancer impacts Black communities and what protective measures individuals can implement for themselves and their families.
During the live session, attendees will have opportunities to submit questions and will receive free educational resources. Blue Faery, whose mission focuses on preventing, treating, and curing primary liver cancer through research, education, and advocacy, maintains several support programs including an online Liver Cancer Community for patients and caregivers. The organization also provides comprehensive patient education through its Patient Resource Guides for Liver Cancer, alongside other initiatives like HCC Lunch & Learn, The Truth About Liver Cancer, and You and Liver Cancer.
The Love Your Liver Black History Month workshop requires registration despite being free of charge. By focusing education during a month dedicated to celebrating Black history and achievement, this event highlights critical health disparities while providing actionable knowledge that could lead to earlier interventions and improved outcomes in a community facing significant healthcare challenges.
