Comcast is advancing digital infrastructure in Fresno County, announcing a substantial rural broadband expansion project in Riverdale and celebrating its first year of service in Caruthers. The initiative will bring high-speed, symmetrical Xfinity broadband to over 160 previously unconnected locations, with completion expected by 2026.
The $4 billion technology investment in California, supported by a $1 million grant from the California Public Utilities Commission, represents a significant commitment to bridging the digital divide in rural communities. Beyond infrastructure development, Comcast has demonstrated its community dedication by donating laptop computers to all eighth-grade students in Caruthers and contributing $10,000 to the local Unified Education Fund.
Local leaders have praised the project's potential impact. Buddy Mendes, County Board of Supervisors Chairman, highlighted the expansion's potential to stimulate economic growth, support existing businesses, and enhance residents' quality of life. Orin Hirschkorn, Caruthers Unified School District Superintendent, emphasized Comcast's holistic approach to community development.
The network promises multi-gigabit internet speeds with 99.9% reliability, providing residents and businesses with robust digital connectivity. This expansion aligns with Comcast's broader Internet Essentials program, which has connected over 2.2 million Californians to affordable internet services since 2011.
By prioritizing rural communities, Comcast is helping to address the critical digital infrastructure gaps that can limit economic opportunities and educational access in underserved areas. The project represents a strategic investment in regional technological equity and community development.
