D-Wave Secures Up to $100 Million in U.S. CHIPS Act Funding to Boost Quantum Computing Leadership

D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NASDAQ: QBTS), the only dual-platform quantum computing company offering both annealing and gate-model systems, has executed a definitive agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce, securing access to up to $100 million in funding under the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act. The agreement follows a previously announced Letter of Intent and marks a significant step in U.S. efforts to maintain competitiveness in quantum computing.

“We’re grateful to the U.S. government for this award to D-Wave and for the leadership it is demonstrating in advancing quantum innovation,” said Dr. Alan Baratz, CEO of D-Wave. “The Administration has made clear that U.S. quantum leadership will require not only breakthrough research, but also the ability to scale, commercialize and manufacture these technologies. This award will help fulfill that mission by expanding domestic quantum capabilities, strengthening the underlying supply chain and bringing increasingly powerful quantum systems to market.”

The funding is expected to support D-Wave’s research and development initiatives, as well as its plans to scale commercialization and manufacturing of quantum systems. As the world’s first commercial supplier of quantum computers, D-Wave offers enterprise-grade systems available on-premises and via its Leap quantum cloud service, which boasts 99.9% availability and uptime. More than 100 organizations across commercial, government, and research sectors already trust D-Wave to tackle complex computational challenges.

This development is important for several reasons. It signals strong government backing for quantum computing, a technology poised to revolutionize industries from logistics to drug discovery. By investing in domestic quantum capabilities, the U.S. aims to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains and maintain a technological edge over global competitors. For investors, the award provides validation of D-Wave’s technology and business model, potentially accelerating revenue growth and market adoption. The broader quantum industry may also benefit from increased attention and funding, driving innovation and job creation.

However, the award is subject to certain risks and uncertainties. These include the possibility that the Department of Commerce may terminate the agreement, that D-Wave may not meet project milestones, and that appropriated funds may not be available. Additionally, the issuance of shares to the Department could dilute existing stockholders. Despite these risks, the agreement underscores the critical role of quantum computing in national strategy and economic competitiveness.
