Dounan Flower Market Sets New Benchmarks in Trading and Logistics

By Advos
Asia's largest flower market in Yunnan, China, reports record trading volumes and enhanced logistics, solidifying its role as a global hub.

The Dounan Flower Market in Kunming, Yunnan Province, is solidifying its status as Asia's premier flower trading hub, achieving record annual trading volumes and implementing high-speed auction systems that enable transactions in as little as 0.6 seconds, according to recent announcements.

In 2025, the market recorded a trading volume of 15.476 billion fresh-cut flowers, with total transaction value reaching 13.484 billion yuan (approximately $2 billion). This scale underscores the market's critical role in the global flower trade, as approximately seven out of every 10 fresh-cut flowers sold in China originate from Dounan. Its distribution network now reaches markets across China and more than 50 countries and regions worldwide.

The market's trading platform, the Kunming International Flora Auction Trading Center, operates with a descending-price auction model. Prices continuously decrease on electronic screens, and buyers must respond within about 0.6 seconds. This rapid bidding process, combined with integrated sorting, packaging, and transportation, reduces the time between trading and shipment, vital for perishable goods like fresh-cut flowers. Li Qian, a flower auctioneer at the center, explained, "Since fresh flowers are perishable goods, we use a descending-price auction format. This helps facilitate rapid circulation."

The market experienced a significant surge in trading activity ahead of the Qixi Festival, often called China's Valentine's Day. Tens of millions of flower stems were sold to domestic and international markets during this peak period. The average price of major fresh-cut flower categories reached 1.1 to 1.3 yuan per stem, approximately 15 percent higher than pre-festival levels. Premium flowers, such as high-quality roses, fetched nearly 15 yuan ($2.23) per stem.

Logistics efficiency is a cornerstone of Dounan's success. Fresh flowers have some of the most demanding logistics requirements in the fresh produce sector, according to Tang Minghong, a client manager with the flower logistics division of SF Express Yunnan. Trading begins in the afternoon, and pickup, packaging, and dispatch can be completed as early as 3:00 a.m., allowing flowers to move swiftly into domestic distribution networks. For international shipments, Dounan has established routes to destinations including Singapore, South Korea, and Malaysia, with deliveries arriving within two days.

The market's comprehensive supply and distribution network connects flower growers in Yunnan with buyers and consumers throughout China and overseas. With 3,300 enterprises and more than 15,000 business entities and individual proprietors, the market employs 46,500 of its approximately 70,000 permanent residents in the flower industry. This integration of large-scale production, centralized trading, and efficient logistics has enabled Dounan to emerge as an important regional hub, contributing to the international growth of China's flower industry.
