French Author Zoé Mahfouz's Debut Collection Added to Royal Danish Library

The Royal Danish Library, Denmark's national library and one of Scandinavia's leading cultural and research institutions, has acquired Zoé Mahfouz's debut short story collection ADHD in D Minor for its collections. The acquisition places the English-language work by a French author based in France inside an institution whose holdings exceed 40 million items, a scale that regularly ranks it among the world's largest libraries, with some international collection-size rankings placing it around ninth or tenth worldwide.

The significance extends beyond the size of the collection. The library is entrusted with preserving and providing access to Denmark's cultural heritage alongside an extensive body of international literature and knowledge, and ADHD in D Minor now sits within that mandate even though it was written in English by a French writer. The acquisition also carries a resonance with the library's guiding motto, "Vi viser vej til viden i et samfund i forandring" — "We show the way to knowledge in a changing society" — as a work originating outside Denmark enters the national collections.

For independent publishing, the move offers a notable signal. ADHD in D Minor is published by North Meridian Press, an independent humanities publishing initiative based in Northeast Alabama and established in 2019. The press describes its mission as supporting distinctive literary voices and works that might otherwise find limited opportunities within traditional publishing, and the book is available through its retail listing at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GZH5T4N3.

The collection has been nominated for the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Short Story Collection. It is described as an unconventional, humour-driven work combining sketches, monologues, manifestos, character studies and observations on contemporary life, drawing on the rhythms of television, sharp satire and an irreverent narrative voice that challenges traditional literary structures. Kirkus Reviews praised a narrative voice that is "sharp, caustic, and hyper-attuned to the cadences of modern clap-backs and viral tweets."

The Danish acquisition follows the book into other international library collections, including those of Brown University in the United States, the University of Helsinki in Finland and University College Cork in Ireland. Its readership extends beyond university walls: the collection is also held at the Mars Desert Research Station in the United States and in the onboard libraries of Scripps Institution of Oceanography research vessels.

Mahfouz is an award-winning French actress, content creator, screenwriter and writer whose work spans fiction, nonfiction and poetry. She holds a Master's degree in Screenwriting from the London Film School, has received international film festival recognition for her comedy screenplays, and her work has appeared in more than 90 journals worldwide, with pieces translated and anthologized in Japanese publications including Ginyu and The Asahi Shimbun. Her published work is held in the collections of Harvard, Yale and Stanford University Libraries.

The addition of a debut collection to a national library with more than 40 million items underscores how independent presses and cross-border literary work can reach major research institutions, and it gives readers and libraries outside the traditional publishing mainstream another example of international reach.
