GeoVax Labs, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOVX), a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing vaccines against infectious diseases, has welcomed the launch of a global mpox vaccine stockpile designed to provide countries with timely and equitable access to vaccines during outbreaks. The initiative, announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) on September 2, was launched on August 27 and is funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and coordinated through the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision. Partners include WHO, UNICEF, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The stockpile is scheduled to begin operations later this month, establishing a long-term mechanism for global mpox vaccine access and response.

Dodd, Chairman and CEO of GeoVax, called the stockpile “an important step forward in moving from reactive outbreak response toward sustained preparedness.” He noted that equitable access requires not just vaccines available after an outbreak begins, but durable procurement infrastructure, sufficient supply, and rapid delivery capabilities. GeoVax is developing GEO-MVA, a Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA)-based vaccine candidate for mpox and smallpox, and plans to initiate a pivotal Phase 3 immune-bridging study in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company highlights that its program has completed key manufacturing, regulatory, clinical, and preclinical milestones, including GMP clinical product manufacture, European Medicines Agency (EMA) Scientific Advice supporting an expedited pathway, and comparative nonclinical studies showing orthopoxvirus-specific immune responses.
The new stockpile builds on the Access and Allocation Mechanism established during the 2024 mpox emergency and addresses persistent barriers to vaccine access. WHO has identified securing a robust product mix and supporting market-shaping efforts to promote sustainable access as strategic objectives. The ICG mechanism has been used for decades to coordinate emergency vaccine supplies for epidemic-prone diseases, and adding mpox establishes a durable framework for international health organizations, donors, countries, and manufacturers to support preparedness and rapid response.
GeoVax believes that additional qualified MVA vaccine sources can help expand supply availability and manufacturing capacity. The company is engaging government agencies and international preparedness organizations about future procurement requirements. Dodd emphasized that preparedness also requires reliable vaccine supply and that GEO-MVA aims to provide an additional source of MVA vaccine capacity to strengthen global supply resilience.
Beyond GEO-MVA, GeoVax is developing next-generation technologies, including MVA-X for potential single-dose protection, continuous-cell-line manufacturing for scalable production, and microarray-based delivery to simplify administration. Dodd stated that the next challenge is ensuring vaccines can be manufactured at scale and deployed broadly.
The stockpile launch represents a significant advance in infrastructure for equitable mpox vaccine access. GeoVax looks forward to working with Gavi, WHO, ICG, and other partners toward expanding sustainable access.
