Glen Rose, the Somervell County seat that markets itself as the official Dinosaur Capital of Texas, has published a November schedule dense enough that tourism officials are openly arguing a single day no longer covers it. The calendar, promoted under the banner of a packed calendar this November, stacks rodeo competition, live music, a chili cook-off, a classic car show and an accessibility-focused event at Dinosaur Valley State Park into the first two weekends alone.
"With so much happening, one day is never enough," said Traci Niedziela, tourism director for Glen Rose, Texas. The town, roughly 90 minutes southwest of Dallas-Fort Worth along the Paluxy River, is betting on that message to capture overnight spending rather than passing traffic.
The month opens November 5 with Open Mic Night at The Palace Public House from 7 to 9 p.m., followed November 6 by the First Friday Art Walk + Art Class at Noblemen Wine. That same weekend brings the Cinch Breakaway at The Expo, with gates opening at 7 p.m., and the three-day Chili Cook-Off at Dinosaur Valley RV Park running November 6 through 8.
Music runs in parallel. Live Music at Loco Coyote Grill features A Chick and a Dude on November 6 and Big Joe Walker on November 7, both 7 to 10 p.m. On November 7, Dinosaur Valley State Park hosts the 2nd Annual Dino-Bility Day at Dinosaur Valley State Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Blue Hole, designed so visitors of all abilities can reach the park's world-famous tracks, with ASL interpreters onsite. That afternoon, Bluegrass & Spirits at Sledge Distillery's 10-Year Anniversary runs 2 to 10 p.m., while the MG Car Show on the Downtown Square fills the historic square with vintage vehicles.
The following weekend, November 14-15, The Expo Center hosts the Let's Give Thanks - Performance Horses Event at The Expo Center, a two-day showcase of cutting, reining and ranch-horse versatility, with Jack Mason & The Full Band playing Loco Coyote Grill on November 14.
The stakes are economic. Rural tourism towns compete for discretionary weekend spending, and Glen Rose is coupling events with attractions meant to extend stays, including the Dinosaur Pass, a free scavenger hunt for 98 dinosaur sculptures that rewards completers with entry to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. Visitors can also catch college football at The Palace Public House on the Downtown Square, where doors open at 11 a.m. For travelers and local businesses alike, the message is that November volume, not a single headline act, is the draw.
