Greater Bay Area Science Forum 2026 Bolsters Global Sci-Tech Hub Ambitions with New Measures and Projects

The 2026 Greater Bay Area (GBA) Science Forum, held across Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao from October 31 to November 2, concluded with significant commitments to bolster the region's innovation ecosystem. Jointly guided by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the event underscored national strategic leadership in accelerating technological breakthroughs and policy implementation, as reported by Media OutReach Newswire.

The forum's opening ceremony in Nansha, Guangzhou, on November 1 saw the release of new support measures for the GBA International Sci-Tech Innovation Center, introduced by state ministries and central authorities. A key highlight was the commitment to fortify original innovation capacity by supporting a world-class cluster of major sci-tech infrastructures. Additionally, two national key R&D projects under the 15th Five-Year Plan were launched: the "Advanced Biotherapeutic Technologies Project" and the "GBA International Sci-Tech Innovation Center Project." These initiatives aim to drive breakthroughs in biotherapeutics and strengthen the innovation center's capabilities.

The ceremony also featured the signing of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Collaborative Innovation Joint Funding Program and major sci-tech cooperation agreements between CAS and Guangdong Province, translating national strategic visions into concrete actions. The forum included an opening ceremony, a main forum, 15 specialized sub-forums, and 10 signature events, with parallel sessions in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Huizhou, Dongguan, and Yangjiang, demonstrating a synergistic approach across multiple cities.

Bringing together four Nobel laureates, distinguished academicians, young scientists, and leading tech entrepreneurs, the forum facilitated discussions on cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs, future technological trends, and the integration of scientific and industrial innovation. This exchange of ideas is crucial for fostering collaborative innovation and maintaining the region's competitive edge.

The GBA's innovation momentum was globally recognized in September 2026 when the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) ranked the "Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou" cluster number one in its Global Innovation Index 2026 Top 100 Science and Technology Clusters. This marks another significant achievement for the region, which has consistently demonstrated robust innovation vitality. Since its inception in December 2021, the GBA Science Forum has evolved into a premier platform for matchmaking and showcasing achievements, further solidifying the region's status as a global sci-tech hub.

For businesses and investors, these developments signal expanding opportunities in advanced biotherapeutics, major sci-tech infrastructures, and collaborative funding programs. The forum's outcomes are expected to accelerate the commercialization of research, attract international talent, and enhance the GBA's role in global supply chains for high-tech industries. As the region continues to integrate policies and resources, the implications for the tech sector are profound, positioning the GBA as a key player in shaping the future of global innovation.
