The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) will host its flagship promotional campaign, Think Business, Think Hong Kong (TBTHK), in Kuala Lumpur on 11 August, targeting Malaysian businesses seeking to expand beyond the domestic market. The full-day symposium at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur will bring together business leaders, investors, and policymakers from both regions to explore cross-border opportunities.
As Malaysia pursues its New Industrial Master Plan 2030—focusing on industrial transformation, sustainability, and global value chain connectivity—Hong Kong positions itself as a strategic partner. Leung Kwan Ho, HKTDC’s Regional Director for Southeast Asia and South Asia, highlighted the longstanding economic relationship: “Malaysia and Hong Kong share a mutually beneficial relationship built on strong trade, investment, and growing business connectivity. Hong Kong can serve as a superconnector and super value-adder, enabling Malaysian companies to realise their ambitions beyond the domestic market.”
Hong Kong, home to nearly 10,000 Chinese Mainland and overseas companies, offers Malaysian firms access to a vast ecosystem of global businesses, investors, and professional services. The symposium will cover key topics such as RMB internationalisation, sustainability and green innovations, Hong Kong’s role as an international financial centre, and healthcare solutions. Notably, Algernon Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Hong Kong SAR Government, and YB Loke Siew Fook, Malaysia’s Minister of Transport, will serve as guests of honour at the opening ceremony.
The event will feature a delegation of around 100 government officials and business leaders from Hong Kong, alongside an exhibition with 30 Hong Kong service providers and start-ups showcasing products and solutions in the Business Support Zone and InnoVenture Salon. One-on-one business consultations and on-site matching aim to facilitate deals and collaboration between Malaysian and Hong Kong companies.
The timing underscores the deepening economic ties between the two regions. In 2025, Malaysia was Hong Kong’s third-largest trading partner among ASEAN member states. Hong Kong was also Malaysia’s second-largest investor after Singapore, with cumulative foreign direct investment (FDI) of US$34.8 billion, and the second-largest source of net FDI flows at US$1.6 billion in the same year.
For Malaysian companies, the partnership offers a gateway to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the wider China market. The HKTDC’s networks and platforms aim to attract more Malaysian businesses to leverage Hong Kong’s advantages, while also helping Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland companies expand into Malaysia and ASEAN. The programme will also include a Hong Kong Luncheon to foster further networking.
