Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) has announced the appointment of Nancy Willis as its President and Executive Director, a role she has held on an interim basis since March 2026. The decision, made by the organization's Board of Directors, underscores a commitment to continuity and steady leadership as HSSV works to rebuild following the December 2024 fire at its Milpitas Animal Community Center.
Willis, who joined HSSV in 2023, has been a key member of the leadership team, overseeing marketing, leading the planning and execution of The Fur Ball fundraising gala, and most recently helping to guide the organization's response and rebuilding efforts after the fire. Her appointment brings a deep understanding of the organization and the community it serves, according to Peter Detkin, Chair of the HSSV Board of Directors.
"Nancy has shown the judgment, resilience and collaborative leadership HSSV needs," Detkin said. "She understands our organization, and the community we serve, and she has helped guide HSSV through one of the most challenging periods in its history. She is well positioned to lead the organization through its next phase of rebuilding and growth."
Willis's career in animal welfare began in 2015 as Director of Development and Marketing at Maui Humane Society. Before transitioning to the nonprofit sector, she spent more than 20 years in professional sports, including 15 years with Major League Baseball. Her extensive background in leadership, marketing, fundraising, and event planning is expected to serve HSSV well as it strengthens its programs and operations.

The appointment comes at a critical juncture for HSSV, which has been navigating the aftermath of the fire that significantly damaged its Milpitas facility. The organization has been focused on recovery and rebuilding, and Willis's leadership is seen as pivotal in guiding these efforts. As President, she will oversee the next phase of the rebuild while enhancing HSSV's programs and long-term ability to serve pets and people throughout the Bay Area.
