Immunefi is collaborating with the Ethereum Foundation to launch the first Attackathon, a crowdsourced security audit contest aimed at enhancing Ethereum's protocol security. This initiative is vital for improving the blockchain's integrity and fostering community engagement.

Immunefi, the leading onchain crowdsourced security platform, has announced a collaboration with the Ethereum Foundation to launch the first-ever Attackathon. This initiative aims to be the largest crowdsourced security audit contest conducted to enhance the security of Ethereum's protocol code. The Attackathon will feature a time-bound code review program managed by Immunefi, enlisting top-tier security researchers. Additionally, it will include a comprehensive community education program focused on Ethereum-related security and technology.
Ethereum, launched in 2015, is a decentralized, open-source blockchain platform that allows developers to build and deploy smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps). It offers a secure and transparent environment for various applications beyond cryptocurrency, driving innovation in finance, gaming, and supply chain management.
Immunefi and the Ethereum Foundation are inviting the Ethereum community, including ecosystem projects and developers, to sponsor the Attackathon by contributing to the program's reward pool. Unique digital memorabilia and specific benefits will be available based on sponsorship tiers. The Ethereum Foundation has kick-started the reward pool with a $500,000 contribution. Community members can participate and view the sponsor leaderboard on Immunefi's website.
The sponsorship funds will be deposited directly into the Attackathon vault on Immunefi, a solution designed to transparently display fund allocation and streamline payments between projects and security researchers. The sponsorship program will conclude and the reward pool will be locked by August 1, 2024, after which further details of the Attackathon will be announced.
Fredrik Svantes, Protocol Security Research Lead at the Ethereum Foundation, expressed excitement about the initiative. "As part of our efforts to help further secure the Ethereum Protocol, we are excited to launch the first audit competition targeting the protocol itself, and can't wait to see what types of vulnerabilities it will surface!" he said.
Immunefi operates the largest web3 security community, with over 45,000 researchers, protecting over $190 billion in user funds for projects like Chainlink, Wormhole, MakerDAO, TheGraph, Synthetix, Polygon, and Optimism. The company has awarded over $100 million in bug bounties, saving more than $25 billion in user funds. Currently, Immunefi offers over $161 million in bounty rewards, and 80% of projects find vulnerabilities missed by traditional audits thanks to Immunefi's researchers.
Mitchell Amador, Founder and CEO of Immunefi, highlighted the transformative potential of Ethereum. "Ethereum is fundamentally transforming the world as we know it and will continue to do so. We are incredibly proud to partner with the Ethereum Foundation and do our part to contribute to the vision of an open, more efficient, and decentralized future. By leveraging our collective security expertise and resources, we aim to ensure the integrity and security of the Ethereum network," he stated.
Sajjad Rehman, VP of Revenue at Immunefi, emphasized the importance of the collaboration. "We're bringing together the world's top security community to safeguard one of the most significant blockchain technologies ever created. This commitment will not only bolster the security of the technology itself but also strengthen the trust and confidence of Ethereum's growing global user base," he said.
The Attackathon will also feature a comprehensive educational component, providing dedicated resources such as Ethereum technology and security explainers, along with a guide on the Attackathon. These resources aim to make the security researcher community more accessible and deepen their engagement within the Ethereum ecosystem.
