Indonesia's Infrastructure Push Relies on Domestic Hot Rolled Structural Steel Production

Indonesia's ongoing infrastructure development, industrial facility expansion, and building construction projects require a steady supply of structural steel that meets precise engineering specifications. From commercial buildings and warehouses to bridges, industrial facilities, and energy infrastructure, hot rolled structural steel sections form the backbone of modern construction. This demand places domestic manufacturers and steel suppliers at the center of a complex construction supply chain, where contractors and fabricators must carefully consider specifications, grades, standards, documentation, and delivery schedules before fabrication begins.

One key player in this supply chain is PT Garuda Yamato Steel (GYS), a steel manufacturer operating from Cikarang, Bekasi, West Java. GYS produces hot rolled structural steel profiles, including H-Beam, IWF (Wide Flange Steel), U Channel, and Equal Angle, through an integrated manufacturing process. The company utilizes Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology, which supports the use of recycled steel and a more circular steelmaking process while delivering products suitable for construction and engineering applications.

The importance of domestic production extends beyond mere supply. Material availability remains a critical issue because delays involving a single profile can interrupt fabrication even when workers, machinery, and other components are already available. Domestic production can shorten communication channels for confirming specifications, documentation, and delivery planning, reducing the risk of project delays. This is particularly vital as Indonesia continues to prioritize infrastructure development across the archipelago.

GYS's manufacturing route begins with steel scrap as the primary raw material, which is melted and refined in an EAF, then continuously cast into semi-finished products such as beam blanks, blooms, and billets. These are subsequently reheated and processed through a rolling mill, where they are shaped into finished hot rolled steel profiles. The process continues through cooling, straightening, cutting, marking, and final inspection to ensure each product meets the required specification. This enables GYS to produce a wide range of structural steel profiles, including high-strength steel and products developed for seismic-resistant structural applications in Indonesia.

Quality verification throughout the process includes checks on chemical composition, mechanical properties such as yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation, dimensional tolerance, surface condition, product marking, and traceability. These controls help ensure that finished steel profiles achieve the required consistency, performance, and compliance for structural and engineering applications. The Mill Test Certificate (MTC) provides verification of material grade, chemical composition, mechanical properties, and production traceability.

Tony Taniwan, President Director of PT Garuda Yamato Steel, said, "We are seeing continued demand for structural products across different construction sectors across Indonesia. Our focus is to coordinate production, processing, and delivery so customers receive accurate information regarding specifications and schedules." This statement underscores the company's commitment to supporting Indonesia's construction needs.

For project teams, selecting hot rolled steel profiles cannot be based only on nominal dimensions. They must review H-beam sizes, flange width, web thickness, flange thickness, weight per metre, material grade, applicable standard, and required length. Profiles with similar nominal heights can still have different weights, mechanical properties, and structural applications. Therefore, reliance on documented specifications and certifications is essential.

GYS also operates a Steel Service Center offering CNC drilling, cutting, sawing, and straightening services, adding value for buyers with confirmed requirements. While some may choose to buy steel directly from the mill, smaller or urgent orders may be sourced through distributors holding local stock. This flexibility supports the diverse needs of the construction industry.

The implications for Indonesia's construction sector are significant. Domestic hot rolled structural steel production ensures a more resilient supply chain, reduces dependence on imports, and supports the circular economy through EAF technology. As infrastructure projects continue to ramp up, the availability of high-quality, locally produced structural steel will be crucial for meeting timelines and maintaining engineering standards. Moreover, the ability to verify claims such as "largest steel mill in Indonesia" or "best quality" against documented capacity and certifications empowers buyers to make informed decisions. Ultimately, final product selection remains dependent on engineering calculations, project specifications, and the standards applicable to each structure, reinforcing the need for reliable domestic production.
