Kennedale residents and their four-legged friends have a new place to play and socialize with the opening of Sturgeon Bark Park, the city's first dedicated dog park. Located at 6729 Oakcrest Drive East, the park offers separate areas for large and small dogs, fire hydrants and toys, a water fountain, picnic tables, and a shaded canopy for owners.
The park was made possible through a generous donation from Ron Sturgeon, who commissioned the park and its design. Garret Davis of Davis Commercial Services coordinated the project from concept to completion. A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official opening, attended by Sturgeon, local representatives, community members, and plenty of excited dogs.
“I am so proud to accept and open our first dog park, and give heartfelt thanks to Mr. Sturgeon, as he gave us this for our citizens to enjoy with their pets, and for his help as we redevelop parts of the city,” said Darrell Hull, Kennedale city manager, at the grand opening.
The creation of Sturgeon Bark Park addresses a long-standing need in Kennedale. Previously, dog owners had to travel outside the city to find a dedicated space for their pets to exercise and interact. The park not only gives dogs room to run but also creates a place where neighbors can meet, socialize, and spend time outdoors together.
For Kennedale, this park marks an important milestone as the city's first such facility, enhancing the quality of life for residents and their pets. It also supports the city's redevelopment efforts, as noted by Hull.
Community members are invited to bring their dogs to Sturgeon Bark Park at 6729 Oakcrest Drive East, Kennedale, TX 76140. A video of the grand opening can be viewed at Sturgeon Bark Park Grand Opening (link placeholder).
The park is a testament to how private donations can fill gaps in public amenities, providing immediate benefits to residents without waiting for municipal budgets. As Kennedale continues to grow, such additions help make the city more attractive to families and individuals who value pet-friendly spaces.
