The Historic Sanctuary of Machupicchu in Peru has been awarded the prestigious title of a “Carbon Neutral Destination,” marking it as the only wonder of the world to receive this certification. This recognition, announced on June 27, coincides with the 17th anniversary of Machupicchu's election as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. The certification underscores Peru's commitment to environmental sustainability and its proactive stance in combating climate change.
This milestone achievement is the result of a collaborative effort involving both public and private sectors. Key players in this initiative include the Municipality of Machupicchu, AJE Group, Inkaterra, Tetra Pak, PROMPERÚ, World Xchange, Luz del Sur, Bosques Amazónicos (BAM), Latam, and CANATUR. Their combined efforts were instrumental in securing the certification, which was awarded by Green Initiative, a leading company in climate certification within the tourism sector.
To obtain the certification, Machupicchu implemented a range of measures aimed at reducing its carbon footprint and offsetting any remaining emissions. Among the strategies adopted were solid waste management and the promotion of a circular economy. These sustainable practices have turned Machupicchu into a model for other tourist destinations seeking to balance economic benefits with environmental responsibility.
Claricia Tirado, Executive President of PROMPERÚ, emphasized the importance of sustainable development during the ceremony held at Manco Cápac Square in Aguas Calientes. “At PROMPERÚ, we have the firm purpose of contributing to the sustainable and decentralized development of our country,” Tirado stated. She further highlighted the responsibility of both public and private sectors in ensuring that economic gains are accompanied by sustainable practices.
The certification process used 2019 carbon emissions as a baseline and focused on initiatives to reduce, treat, and manage waste. Key processes implemented included the installation of a PET plastic and cardboard compacting plant, a biodiesel plant for processing waste oil from restaurants and casinos, an organic waste pyrolyzing plant to generate natural charcoal, and two glass crushing machines to convert bottles into construction and ornamental grit. This circular economy model allows for the effective reuse of materials such as plastic, cardboard, Tetra Pak containers, and glass, thereby reducing the environmental impact.
PROMPERÚ continues to advocate for responsible and sustainable tourism, recognizing that such efforts are essential rather than optional. The success at Machupicchu serves as a testament to what can be achieved through concerted efforts and innovative practices in environmental sustainability.
