The Historic Sanctuary of Machupicchu, located in the Cusco region of Peru, has once again been awarded the prestigious Carbon Neutral certification. This accolade, given on June 27th, coincides with the 17th anniversary of Machupicchu's designation as one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World. This recognition underscores Peru's leadership in environmental sustainability and its dedicated efforts to combat climate change.
The certification comes as a result of a collaborative effort between both public and private sectors. Key contributors include the Municipality of Machupicchu, Grupo AJE, Inkaterra, and Tetra Pak, supported by PROMPERÚ, World Xchange, Luz del Sur, Bosques Amazónicos (BAM), Latam, and CANATUR. These organizations have collectively worked towards achieving this notable environmental milestone.
This certification was awarded by Green Initiative, a leading company in climate certification within the tourism sector, and recognizes Machupicchu's successful implementation of its decarbonization goals. Effective measures have been adopted in the Historic Sanctuary to reduce its carbon footprint and offset remaining emissions. These practices include solid waste management and the promotion of a circular economy, which are essential components of sustainable tourism.
Claricia Tirado, Executive President of PROMPERÚ, emphasized the significance of this achievement during a ceremony held at Plaza Manco Cápac in Aguas Calientes. "At PROMPERÚ, we are firmly committed to contributing to the sustainable and decentralized development of our country," Tirado stated. "Everyone involved in the public or private sector has a responsibility to ensure that the economic benefits generated are accompanied by sustainable management," she added.
The certification process utilized the 2019 carbon emission results as a baseline and focused on stimulating actions for the reduction, treatment, and proper management of generated waste. Additionally, it included efforts to raise awareness among residents, businesses, and hotels about the importance of sustainability.
