The PNE Group has concluded the sale of another large photovoltaic project in South Africa, transferring a planned 250 MW solar facility in the Free State province to a major South African independent power producer. The Cuxhaven, Germany-based renewable energy developer announced the transaction on NEWMEDIAWIRE, marking another step in its expansion across international growth markets.
The deal matters beyond the balance sheet of a single developer. South Africa has struggled for years with electricity supply constraints, and private-sector solar capacity of this scale can add meaningful generation to a grid that depends heavily on state utility performance. For readers and businesses in the region, projects like this signal that private capital continues to flow into South African renewables despite broader economic uncertainty. For the wider industry, the transaction demonstrates that European developers can originate, de-risk and exit large solar assets in emerging markets, a model that underpins much of the global energy transition.
PNE South Africa will remain involved after the sale, providing project development support to the investor through to Financial Close. That continuing role is significant because it keeps local expertise attached to the asset during the riskiest phase of a solar project, when financing, permits and grid agreements must be finalized before construction can begin.
Roland Stanze, COO of PNE AG, framed the sale as evidence of the company's execution capability. "With the sale of this strategic, large scale PV project we are continuing our successful project development activities in South Africa," Stanze said. "The transaction demonstrates that our local teams are able to develop attractive projects in international growth markets and successfully market them. At the same time, we remain involved in the project and contribute our expertise to its further development." He added that the deal "underlines our ability to continuously realise value from our extensive project pipeline and to sell projects at the appropriate time."
The scale of that pipeline underscores South Africa's importance to PNE. As of June 2026, the group's project pipeline in the country comprised around 2,000 MW of photovoltaic capacity and around 2,800 MW of wind energy. Those figures position South Africa as one of PNE's larger international markets and suggest further transactions could follow as projects mature. PNE, listed in the SDAX, has operated for more than 30 years and describes itself as one of the most experienced developers of onshore and offshore wind farms. Its portfolio spans site investigation, permitting, financing, construction, operation and repowering, and it also offers battery storage solutions. For investors and energy analysts, the South African sale is a useful indicator that the company's pipeline-to-cash conversion is functioning in markets outside Europe, while for South African power consumers it represents another incremental addition to the country's renewable generation base.
