Quantum BioPharma Cuts Q2 Costs by 53%, Advances Lucid-MS to Phase 2 Trial After FDA Approval

Quantum BioPharma Ltd. (NASDAQ: QNTM) (CSE: QNTM) has announced its second-quarter 2026 financial and operational results, highlighting a significant reduction in expenses and a major regulatory milestone for its lead drug candidate. The company reported a 53% year-over-year decrease in operating expenses to $2.29 million, and a 47% reduction in general and administrative expenses to $1.76 million. These cost-cutting measures reflect a strategic effort to streamline operations while advancing its pipeline.

As of June 30, the company held approximately $9.5 million in cash, cash equivalents, and digital assets, a substantial increase from $4.1 million at the end of 2025. Management stated that current liquidity is sufficient to fund planned operations until at least October 2027, based on the first-half 2026 cash burn rate. This financial stability provides a runway for the company to pursue its clinical development goals without immediate funding pressures.

The most notable development came after the quarter's end, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Quantum's Investigational New Drug (IND) application for Lucid-MS. This approval clears the way for a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 2 clinical trial in patients with progressive multiple sclerosis (MS). Lucid-MS is a patented new chemical entity that has shown in preclinical models the ability to prevent and reverse myelin degradation, which is the underlying mechanism of MS. If successful, this could represent a significant advancement in treating a condition with limited therapeutic options.

The company's focus on neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders, as well as alcohol misuse, is reflected in its diverse pipeline. Through its wholly owned subsidiary, Lucid Psycheceuticals Inc., Quantum is dedicated to advancing Lucid-MS. Additionally, Quantum retains a 19.84% stake in Unbuzzd Wellness Inc., the company that markets the OTC version of its UNBUZZD product. The agreement with Unbuzzd includes royalty payments of 7% of sales until payments total $250 million, after which the royalty drops to 3% in perpetuity. Quantum also retains full rights to develop pharmaceutical and medical uses of similar products.

The FDA's approval of the IND application is a critical step for Quantum, as it enables the company to initiate a Phase 2 trial that could provide key efficacy data. For patients with progressive MS, a condition that currently has few treatment options, the potential of Lucid-MS to reverse myelin damage offers hope. For the biotech industry, this development underscores the importance of innovative approaches to neurodegenerative diseases. Quantum's cost management and extended cash runway may also position the company to attract further investment or partnerships as it advances its clinical program.
