SignalHire, a B2B contact intelligence platform, has released a report analyzing tens of thousands of recruiter searches between January and April 2025 and the same period in 2026. The data reveals significant shifts in hiring priorities, with demand for physical therapy roles skyrocketing and generic software engineer titles losing relevance.
According to the report, U.S. searches for Physical Therapist grew 1,473% year over year, while Physical Therapist Assistant searches surged 5,717%. This indicates that the physical therapy shortage, often described as a future problem by official forecasts, is already a crisis in the eyes of recruiters. Hiring managers are sourcing ahead of projections because candidates in this field take time to find and convert. The competition for physical therapy talent in 2026 is far more intense than published forecasts reflect, and recruiters who started early will have filled pipelines before official data confirms the shortage.
Conversely, searches for the broad title "Software Engineer" fell 68% globally year over year, with a 75% decline in the UK. However, this does not mean companies are hiring fewer technical people. Instead, they are searching for specific expertise. In the UK, searches for Java Developer rose 3,257%, and QA and Software Test Engineer searches increased 567%. This shift suggests that AI tools have absorbed many tasks previously covered by generalist software engineers, making specialized roles more critical.
The report highlights that for talent acquisition teams, the window between current trends and when they become widely visible in public data is crucial. The market is sorting itself, and the data indicates where it is going. SignalHire's platform provides access to over 850 million verified professional profiles with real-time email and phone verification, serving sales, recruiting, and marketing teams globally through its database, browser extension, API, and Data Enrichment workflows.
These findings underscore the importance of recruiters adapting their sourcing strategies to reflect the evolving landscape. As the demand for specialized roles intensifies, the ability to identify and engage candidates early will be a key competitive advantage.
