Save the Redwoods League has agreed to purchase a 1,517-acre property near the Russian River in Sonoma County, a strategic land acquisition that will significantly expand regional conservation efforts and public recreational spaces.
The Monte Rio Redwoods Expansion property, currently owned by Mendocino Redwood Company, contains second- and third-growth coast redwood and Douglas-fir forest. Located less than two hours north of San Francisco, the property will be conveyed to Sonoma County Regional Parks after purchase, ultimately expanding the Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park and Open Space Preserve.
The land acquisition represents a critical conservation milestone, connecting over 22,000 acres of forest, wildlife corridors, and watershed from the Bohemian Highway to the Sonoma Coast. The property includes 1,287 acres of coast redwood forest that has been in timber production for over 100 years and contains 3.7 miles of streams critical for coho salmon and steelhead trout habitats.
Sam Hodder, president and CEO of Save the Redwoods League, emphasized the ecological significance, stating that a connected landscape is a resilient one. The $24 million purchase will be funded through public and private sources, including up to $6 million from Sonoma County Ag + Open Space.
Beyond habitat preservation, the property offers substantial climate benefits. Redwood forests are known for their exceptional carbon storage capabilities, with young redwoods capable of storing significant carbon amounts in a relatively short period. The acquisition represents a strategic investment in environmental conservation and climate resilience.
