Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are leveraging emerging technologies at an unprecedented rate, with artificial intelligence (AI) and social media becoming critical tools for growth and operational strategy, according to Verizon Business's 2025 State of Small Business Survey.
The survey of 600 U.S. small businesses reveals that 38% are now integrating AI into their operations, with significant applications across marketing, communication, customer service, and cybersecurity. Twenty-eight percent use AI for marketing and social media, while 24% employ it for written communications and customer interactions.
Social media platforms have become essential channels for business engagement, with Facebook remaining the most popular platform and 76% of SMBs reporting positive business impacts. Notably, 58% of surveyed businesses are now active on TikTok, demonstrating a strategic shift toward emerging digital platforms.
Cybersecurity has also emerged as a critical concern, with 52% of SMBs acknowledging that business growth increases potential cyber threat risks. Nearly half of the respondents (47%) invested in technologies to improve their cybersecurity infrastructure in the past year, reflecting a proactive approach to digital protection.
The survey highlights a nuanced approach to workforce management, with AI playing an increasingly important role. Fifty-six percent of businesses believe AI can help offset challenges related to workforce constraints, and 53% see AI as a potential tool for staff retention.
These findings underscore a broader trend of technological adaptation among small businesses, signaling a fundamental transformation in how companies compete and thrive in the digital economy. As technology becomes more accessible, SMBs are strategically positioning themselves to leverage innovative tools for growth and resilience.
