Snapchat Introduces New Safety Measures for Teens

Snapchat has unveiled a series of new safety features designed to protect its teenage users in an increasingly challenging digital landscape. The social media platform aims to create a safer environment where teens can comfortably interact with friends they know in real life.

The new safety measures are part of Snapchat's ongoing commitment to user safety and include several significant updates. Rachel Hochhauser, Snap’s Head of Safety Operations Outreach, conducted a nationwide media tour on June 25th to discuss these features.

One of the key updates is the introduction of expanded in-app warnings. Teens will now receive alerts if they get a chat from someone who has been blocked or reported by others, or from a region where the teen’s network is not typically located. This feature is designed to help teens recognize and avoid interactions with potential strangers.

Another important update is the simplification of location-sharing. Snapchat will now provide expanded reminders to ensure users are aware of which friends they are sharing their location with on the Snap Map. This aims to give teens better control over their privacy and safety.

The platform has also enhanced its friending protections. These new measures will prevent suspicious friend requests from reaching teens, reducing the likelihood of them connecting with people they do not know in real life.

Additionally, Snapchat has improved its blocking features to prevent bullying and repeated harassment. The updates will limit the ability of any new accounts created by someone who has been previously blocked to reach out to the user again.
