The Italian Barrel, an intimate Northern Italian restaurant in New Orleans' French Quarter, has been honored with Wine Spectator's 2026 Award of Excellence, recognizing its exceptional wine program. The award highlights the restaurant's commitment to integrating wine seamlessly into the dining experience.
Wine Spectator's Restaurant Awards, now in their 45th year, celebrate the world's best restaurants for wine. This year, 4,012 restaurants received awards across three levels: the Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence, and the Grand Award. The Italian Barrel earned the Award of Excellence, which requires a wine list of at least 75 selections, featuring a well-chosen assortment of quality producers that match the menu in price and style.
"The restaurant industry is rapidly transforming as diners become more selective about when, how and what they drink. As wine drinkers grow more mindful, restaurants are adapting with creative wine programs," said Marvin R. Shanken, Chairman and CEO of Wine Spectator. The restaurant, located at 1240 Decatur Street, was founded by Verona-born Chef Samantha Castagnetti and is now stewarded by the Cates. It specializes in Northern Italian cuisine, with seasonal pastas, composed secondi, and carefully sourced ingredients, complemented by a deeply Italian wine program.
