Danish contemporary artist Thyra Hilden presents a bold new exhibition titled 'Ride the Tiger' at Gallery MAXUS101, showcasing a series of monumental works that redefine artistic representation of feminine power. The exhibition, running from March 28 to May 11, 2025, features canvas pieces that transcend traditional painting and sculpture, creating a dynamic visual language of feminine expression.
Hilden's latest works explore the feminine through unconventional methods, cutting, bending, and transforming canvas into powerful vulva-shaped formations. These pieces are not passive representations but active statements about women's agency and creative potential. Gallery owner Anthon Maxus notes that Hilden's work connects to an important artistic tradition established by pioneers like Hannah Wilke and Louise Bourgeois.
Drawing inspiration from the Hindu goddess Durga, Hilden's exhibition symbolizes the struggle against patriarchal suppression. Her artistic approach transforms canvases into three-dimensional objects that challenge traditional artistic boundaries, presenting vulva imagery as symbols of strength, creativity, and resilience.
The exhibition includes both large-scale installations and smaller wall objects, demonstrating Hilden's versatility and commitment to exploring feminine energy across different scales and materials. By reimagining canvas as an active, malleable medium, she creates a provocative dialogue about artistic representation and gender dynamics.
Hilden's previous internationally recognized projects, such as her 'City on Fire' series, which virtually set cultural monuments ablaze, underscore her ongoing exploration of transformative energy. 'Ride the Tiger' represents a more intimate yet equally powerful continuation of her artistic vision, inviting viewers to reconsider preconceived notions of femininity and artistic expression.
