UGI Utilities is set to begin critical infrastructure upgrades on natural gas mains and service lines throughout central Harrisburg, with construction scheduled to continue through the end of June. The extensive project will impact multiple streets near the state capitol, involving comprehensive underground system improvements.
The infrastructure upgrades will affect eight distinct street segments, including sections of North 10th Street, Walnut Street, North Court Street, North 2nd Street, North 3rd Street, Pine Street, South Street, and Oliver Alley. Construction will occur daily, including weekends, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Local residents and businesses should anticipate significant transportation disruptions, including potential road closures, detours, and restricted parking. Natural gas service interruptions are expected, requiring UGI representatives to access properties for equipment inspection and relighting.
These infrastructure investments represent a critical effort to maintain and modernize the region's natural gas distribution system. By proactively replacing aging infrastructure, UGI aims to enhance service reliability and safety for its approximately 760,000 customers across its service territory.
The project's completion timeline remains flexible, with final paving and restoration to occur after underground work concludes. Weather and working conditions may influence the ultimate project duration.
