The Provincial Council of Valencia has granted a subsidy to promote The Way of the Holy Grail as a strategic cultural and tourist resource for the province. The aid, awarded by Presidential Decree No. 13616 dated November 7, 2025, aims to consolidate this route within the European Cultural Route framework and position Valencian municipalities along its path.
Deputy for Tourism Pedro Cuesta emphasized that initiatives like The Way of the Holy Grail connect heritage, identity, European culture and sustainable tourism development while promoting territorial cohesion and external projection of the province. The Cultural Association El Camino del Santo Grial has accepted the grant and committed to fulfilling all conditions, particularly regarding institutional publicity, transparency, and execution of subsidized actions.
The funded activities focus on promotion, communication, dissemination, and territorial consolidation of the route. This reinforces the presence of Valencian municipalities in a European cultural route that combines history, scientific research, spirituality and cultural tourism. The passage of The Holy Grail Way through the province represents a structural opportunity with medium and long-term impacts across multiple areas.
Valencia is positioned as the epicentre and culmination of the route since its Cathedral houses the Holy Chalice, venerated as the Holy Grail. This unique status makes the province a singular worldwide reference point, enhancing international visibility within European cultural networks. The route forms a continuous axis connecting valleys, orchards, the coast and metropolitan areas, integrating municipalities of various sizes into a shared cultural narrative that fosters inter-municipal cooperation and territorial balance.
The itinerary promotes cultural, spiritual and regenerative tourism complementary to traditional tourism models, potentially attracting visitors throughout the year and generating sustained flows beyond peak seasons. Throughout the provincial route, historical, religious, landscape and ethnographic heritage resources are activated from the Palancia valley to the orchard and coast, promoting conservation, interpretation and transmission to future generations.
The Camino fosters opportunities linked to local cultural and tourist economies including accommodation, restaurants, cultural guides, local products, crafts, educational activities and cultural events. As a European Cultural Route, The Way of the Holy Grail promotes shared values such as peace, hospitality, knowledge-seeking and intercultural understanding, aligning with European cultural policies and sustainable development goals.
The consolidation of the Valencian section strengthens the route's candidacy and development within the Council of Europe's Cultural Routes Programme, opening opportunities for institutional, academic and tourism cooperation internationally. The Provincial Council and Cultural Association reaffirm their commitment to transparency, good management of public resources, and promotion of sustainable cultural development based on heritage respect, local identity and territorial cooperation.
The subsidy will be paid in a single installment after justification of proper execution and expenses according to established regulations. Eighteen Valencian municipalities participate in the route, from Algimia de Alfara as the gateway from Castellón through various towns including Sagunto with its Roman theater and medieval Jewish quarter, Port of Sagunto with its coastal extension, El Puig de Santa Maria with its Royal Monastery, and culminating at Valencia Cathedral housing the Holy Chalice.
