The Virginia Women in Wine organization is spotlighting the crucial role of women in the state's wine industry through its inaugural Women in Wine Trail, a month-long celebration during Women's History Month that explores the significant contributions of female winemakers, vineyard staff, and industry leaders.
The trail, spanning eight regions across Virginia, offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience 50 wineries, cideries, and meaderies where women play pivotal roles in production and management. From March 14-31, 2025, participants can engage in diverse activities including female-curated wine flights, vineyard tours, blending workshops, and behind-the-scenes discussions.
A key highlight of the initiative is the upcoming Trailblazer Bash at Bluemont Vineyards, where the organization will present three Trailblazer Awards to women who have made substantial impacts in Virginia's wine history. The event will also launch a critical report, 'Closing the Gender Gap in Winemaking', which reveals that women currently represent only 17% of head winemaker positions in the state.
By creating networking opportunities and promoting women-led ventures, the Virginia Women in Wine organization aims to address systemic barriers and advance gender representation in the wine industry. The trail serves not only as a celebratory event but also as a platform for raising awareness about gender disparities and highlighting the exceptional skills and leadership of women in winemaking.
