Beijing Chaoyang Kicks Off International Light Consumption Season and Liangma River Arts Festival

Beijing's Chaoyang District has launched the 2026 Beijing Chaoyang International Light Consumption Season and the 2026 Liangma River International Arts Festival, an annual event that transforms the city's waterfront into a stage for art, light, and culture. The festival opened on September 24 and will run until October 11 for the Light Consumption Season, while the Arts Festival continues until November 20. This year's theme, "AMAZING YOU," spans both the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays for the first time, offering ten major themes and over a hundred performances, according to Media OutReach Newswire.

The event is structured around two cores: the Liangma River Cultural and Economic Belt and the Olympic Central Area. It links key districts such as CBD, Sanlitun, Chaowai UIC, Dawangjing, and Gaobeidian, creating a night-tour landscape where water and land intertwine. Visitors can board the Liangma River cruise "Light-Chasing" to watch light and shadow bloom on Lotus Lake and North Lake, or stroll the Chaoyang Park night-tour route from the East Fifth Gate to the Shell Theatre, experiencing the light-and-shadow show "Romance of Light and Shadow." This production, jointly created by the China Oriental Performing Arts Group and other professional teams, turns Chaoyang Park into a borderless, three-dimensional theatre with seven themed theatres across mechanical installations, waterborne cruises, and floating stages.

The festival also serves as a platform for international artistic exchange. Along the Liangma River, a French creative team presents a floating piano and double bass duet, while balloon artists from the Netherlands and France offer interactive performances. A giant light installation, "Arch Flower" by a French artist, has become a new landmark. Inside the Shell Theatre, over ten performances are scheduled, including the waterside exclusive edition of Yang Liping's "Dynamic Yunnan," a retro jazz night with ZaZaZsu, and a performance by the Beijing Music Festival Youth Orchestra. These acts showcase a convergence of Eastern and Western art, tradition and modernity, reflecting the city's spirit of "Rising with the World."

Now in its fourth edition, the Light Consumption Season has become a calling card of Beijing's nighttime economy and a window into the vitality of Chinese cities. Beyond light shows, Chaoyang District offers over a hundred integrated cultural, commercial, tourism, sports, and exhibition activities. During the 2026 China Open, the National Tennis Center hosts an "immersive carnival." The Olympic Forest Park features outdoor concerts, fluorescent night runs, and night rock climbing. The Olympic Park International Carbohydrate Festival brings together delicacies from across the country, and the Chaowai UIC Block launches the "READYGO City Playground," featuring the nation's exclusive "Batman Day," the DC Merchandise Store, celebrity pop-ups, and the Stray Kids official pop-up SKZOO.

The event's implications extend beyond entertainment. By integrating culture, commerce, tourism, sports, and exhibitions, it aims to stimulate consumption and enhance Beijing's global image. For businesses, it offers opportunities in retail, hospitality, and entertainment. For visitors, it provides diverse experiences that blend local culture with international flair. As autumn arrives, Chaoyang invites the world to boat on the shimmering waterfront, stroll dazzling streets, and feel the urban charm where past and present, China and the world, coexist.
