Garuda Indonesia Adopts Piece-Based Baggage Policy, Offering Up to 64 kg

Garuda Indonesia is advancing its service transformation by introducing a piece-based checked baggage policy, known as the Piece Concept, for tickets issued on or after September 1, 2026. The new policy replaces the traditional weight-based system, allowing passengers to check up to two pieces of baggage with a maximum weight of 32 kilograms each, totaling up to 64 kilograms, depending on route, travel class, and fare category.

The transition to the Piece Concept is designed to provide passengers with greater clarity and certainty when planning their baggage. Previously, allowances were calculated based on the combined weight of all baggage under the Weight Concept. The new approach, widely adopted across the global aviation industry, aims to enhance service standardization and support more efficient baggage handling, particularly for passengers connecting to international flights.

Under the new policy, passengers traveling on domestic Economy Class will receive an allowance of one checked piece weighing up to 23 kilograms, up from the previous 20 kilograms. Business Class and First Class passengers on domestic routes will receive two pieces weighing up to 32 kilograms each, increasing from 30 kilograms and 40 kilograms, respectively. On international routes, Economy Class passengers will receive two pieces weighing up to 23 kilograms each, up from 30 kilograms total. Business Class and First Class international passengers will also receive two pieces up to 32 kilograms each, increased from 40 kilograms and 50 kilograms, respectively. Overall, passengers may receive up to 34 kilograms of additional checked baggage allowance compared to the previous policy.

Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills emphasized that the implementation reflects the company's commitment to delivering a travel experience that is modern, consistent, and transparent. "Clearer limits on the number and maximum weight of baggage pieces will allow passengers to plan and prepare their baggage more easily, from the initial stages of their journey through to departure," Mills said.

The new policy applies only to tickets issued on or after September 1, 2026, for travel on or after that date. Passengers with tickets issued before that date will retain the baggage allowance stated on their tickets. To ensure a smooth transition, Garuda Indonesia encourages passengers to review the Piece Concept provisions, including applicable allowances based on route, travel class, and fare category, on its official website at https://www.garuda-indonesia.com/id/en/new-baggage-policy. Further information is also available through the Garuda Indonesia Contact Centre and official social media channels.

Mills added that the implementation of the Piece Concept represents another important step towards delivering services that are more transparent, consistent, and aligned with passenger needs, while upholding the highest standards of safety and compliance with applicable aviation regulations.
