As the Democratic Republic of the Congo grapples with the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak ever recorded, GeoVax Labs, Inc. The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus (BDBV), has already resulted in more than 4,300 cases and 2,000 deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), and is on a trajectory that could surpass the death toll of the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic. Currently, no approved vaccine specifically targets Bundibugyo virus.

GeoVax, a biotechnology company developing vaccines against infectious diseases, has extensive experience with its Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) vaccine platform. The company's portfolio includes vaccine candidates for Zaire ebolavirus, Sudan ebolavirus, and Marburg virus, all of which have shown encouraging protective efficacy in non-human primate lethal-challenge studies. GeoVax's lead infectious disease program, GEO-MVA, is an MVA-based vaccine for mpox and smallpox, but the company sees its broader hemorrhagic fever portfolio as strategic optionality. GEO-MVA is advancing toward a pivotal clinical program, with portions planned for African regions affected by significant infectious disease challenges, including areas impacted by the current Ebola outbreak. These regional engagements could naturally extend to exploring how GeoVax's expertise might aid the Ebola response.

The company is also working on scalable MVA manufacturing processes, including a continuous cell-line method designed to improve efficiency and cost. This could be crucial for producing vaccines at scale during outbreaks.

GeoVax is open to collaborations, licensing arrangements, and public-private partnerships to further develop its hemorrhagic fever candidates without diverting resources from GEO-MVA.
