Madilyn Abor, a Baylor University student who survived acute lymphocytic leukemia after facing life-threatening complications during treatment, has been awarded the 2025 Strong Arm Leukemia Scholarship by John Foy & Associates. The $1,000 scholarship will support Abor's final semester as she completes her Bachelor of Science in Public Health degree, with plans to become a pediatric oncology physician assistant.
Abor was diagnosed with ALL at age nine and underwent intensive treatment that led to septic shock, organ failure, and two blood clots around her heart. Her recovery has fueled her commitment to helping children with leukemia and other serious conditions envision futures where they not only survive but thrive. In her scholarship essay, Abor described her physical suffering, survivor's guilt, and determination to serve as a source of hope for children in similar situations.
The scholarship recognizes Abor's personal journey and her professional aspirations to work in pediatric oncology. She specifically aims to "stand beside children who need someone to help them see their own strength, and to ensure they know their battles do not define them." Abor has already begun this work as a camp counselor with Camp John Mark, gaining practical experience supporting children facing health challenges.
John Foy & Associates, the Atlanta-based personal injury law firm administering the scholarship, was deeply moved by Abor's story. The firm hopes the financial support will ease her final semester expenses as she prepares for graduate studies. After graduation, Abor plans to work as a medical assistant for one year before entering a physician assistant program focused on pediatric oncology.
The scholarship announcement highlights the intersection of healthcare education and survivor advocacy in addressing childhood cancer. Abor's path from patient to aspiring healthcare provider represents a full-circle journey that could influence pediatric cancer care by bringing personal experience to medical practice. Her story demonstrates how survivor perspectives can enrich healthcare professions dedicated to the conditions they overcame.
