Rabbi Anson Laytner and Rabbi Dan Bridge's adaptation of the ancient story 'The Animals' Lawsuit Against Humanity' will premiere as a theatrical reading at Climate Week NYC on September 23, 2024. The event is sponsored by the Earth Law Center (ELC), a legal nonprofit dedicated to advancing Earth-centered laws and movements.
The play, originally written by Muslim scholars in the 10th century CE, is notable for its interfaith approach to environmentalism. Rabbi Laytner will speak at the event, emphasizing the play's contemporary relevance and its historical roots in the Abrahamic faiths' teachings on caring for living beings. 'The message of this tale is shockingly contemporary,' Laytner stated, highlighting its importance amidst today's ecological crises.
The narrative follows humans who exploit an island's animal inhabitants, leading the animals to appeal to the King of the Jinn. The ensuing trial, where animals argue for their rights against human exploitation, mirrors modern efforts to recognize and defend the rights of ecosystems and species. Grant Wilson, ELC's Executive Director, noted, 'The play mirrors the efforts of advocates across the world to recognize and defend the rights of ecosystems and species based on the reality that all life has a right to exist.'
ELC's sponsorship of the play aligns with its broader mission to advance the Rights of Nature and animal rights. The organization has been instrumental in initiatives such as the creation of a national law in Panama protecting sea turtles and advocating for Indigenous guardianship over the rights of Southern Resident Orcas in the Pacific Northwest.
Produced by Liv Boren and Chris Dooly of Jack & Grace Productions, the theatrical reading will be followed by a panel discussion with environmental leaders. The panel will explore the play's application to modern legal movements and challenges, further emphasizing the importance of ecocentric legal frameworks.
