Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining traction globally, with 18% of vehicles sold last year being electric, a significant increase from just 2% five years ago. However, large-scale adoption of EVs remains a challenge due to range anxiety and lengthy charging times. U Power (NASDAQ: UCAR), a company specializing in EV power solutions, aims to overcome these hurdles with its proprietary battery-swapping technology, UOTTA.
UOTTA allows consumers and fleet operators to replace depleted EV batteries with fully charged ones in under five minutes, effectively addressing both range anxiety and charging time issues. Customers pay only for the vehicle when purchasing through the battery bank and then a monthly rental fee for the battery. This model reduces the procurement cost of EVs and offers rental and service fees for battery swapping that are 30% to 50% cheaper than fast charging. Additionally, this method extends the lifespan of the batteries and ensures environmentally friendly dismantling and recycling practices.
U Power's journey began in 2013 as a vehicle-sourcing services company in China. Since then, it has partnered with leading automotive manufacturers, establishing over 800 operational outlets across China. In 2017, U Power entered the new energy electric vehicle sales market and introduced UOTTA technology in 2019. The company has since played a significant role in drafting China's battery-swapping standards and became the world's first publicly listed company specializing in EV battery-swapping technology in 2023.
U Power has secured 14 patents and 24 pending patent applications in China. Last year, it sold and delivered six battery-swapping stations to four customers, bringing its total to eleven stations sold. Its solutions include UOTTA-powered EVs, battery-swapping stations, and a data management platform that synchronizes real-time data.
In a significant move, U Power recently partnered with Dutch EV company UNEX to provide battery-swapping vehicles and station services to the Associação Nacional dos Transportes Rodoviários em Automóveis Ligeiros (ANTRAL) in Portugal. This collaboration aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector by 2030, aligning with the European Union's decarbonization targets. The first phase of the agreement includes two swapping stations and 120 battery-swapping taxis.
ANTRAL operates over 1,000 taxis, covering more than 80 million kilometers annually, with carbon emissions reaching 1,440 tons and fuel costs close to €10 million. By adopting UOTTA battery swapping services, related costs are expected to be reduced by 30-50%, supporting the EU's goal of achieving 30 million zero-emission electric vehicles by 2030.
Jia Li, Chairman and CEO of U Power, stated, "This collaboration between UNEX and ANTRAL that utilizes our UOTTA technology marks a significant stride towards promoting sustainable transportation and reducing emissions. By combining our battery-swapping expertise with their commitment to decarbonization, we aim to facilitate the transition of taxi fleets from fossil fuels to electric mobility."
U Power's international expansion includes ventures in Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, and Peru. In Peru, U Power is conducting a collaborative pilot test with a mining firm to evaluate electric heavy-duty vehicles on an established haulage route. The company also signed a memorandum of understanding with Cornerstone Technologies Holdings Limited to explore the application of new energy charging equipment in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.
U Power's existing customers continue to show confidence in its technology. A major taxi operator in Jilin, China, recently placed a follow-on purchase order for U Power's dual-mode intelligent battery swapping stations. These stations feature separate robotic guided vehicles for battery removal and installation, reducing swapping time to two to three minutes and enhancing operational efficiency by approximately 15%.
As U Power transitions from a vehicle-sourcing business to providing comprehensive battery-swapping solutions, it is committed to making the world greener by offering an ecosystem of advanced vehicle technology. The company expects its innovative solutions to play a pivotal role in driving further growth in the EV market.
