U.S.-Supported Initiative Launches in Kyrgyzstan to Combat Gender-Based Violence

A new initiative to combat gender-based violence (GBV) in Kyrgyzstan has been launched with support from the U.S. Embassy Public Diplomacy Programs. The PowerTools program, developed by the Footage Foundation, will work in partnership with local organization Kyrgyz El Agartuu Public Association to raise awareness, advocate for policy changes, and mobilize communities against GBV.

The program aligns with U.S. foreign policy goals in Kyrgyzstan, aiming to promote accountable governance, stability, and counter transnational threats such as human trafficking. By focusing on GBV prevention and addressing gender disparities in economic participation, the initiative underscores the strength of U.S.-Kyrgyzstan cooperation in tackling critical social issues.

PowerTools will employ innovative storytelling methods, advocacy workshops, and a Stakeholder Summit to engage government officials and civil society organizations in policy-making dialogues. The project will begin with a needs assessment to identify gaps in current GBV prevention efforts, culminating in a white paper with recommendations for creating a safer, more equitable Kyrgyz Republic.

Dr. Kristen Ali Eglinton, Executive Director and co-founder of Footage Foundation, emphasized the importance of addressing GBV in Kyrgyzstan for creating a safer society. Nurzhan Tulegabylova of Kyrgyz El Agartuu Public Association highlighted the program's potential to shift local attitudes and challenge stereotypes about GBV survivors.

Ajay Rao, Deputy Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in the Kyrgyz Republic, connected the initiative to the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, emphasizing the value of international collaboration in addressing global challenges.

This initiative represents a significant step in the fight against GBV in Kyrgyzstan, demonstrating the power of cross-sector collaboration and international support in driving social change. By focusing on policy dialogue, community engagement, and innovative storytelling techniques, the PowerTools program has the potential to create lasting impact in the prevention of GBV and the promotion of gender equality in the region.
