Peru is captivating international audiences at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai with a stunning exhibition that celebrates the Mochica civilization's extraordinary cultural heritage. The Peru Pavilion's temporary exhibit, "The Mochicas, Sovereigns of the Desert," showcases meticulously crafted replicas of the Lord of Sipán's jewelry and a life-sized representation of a Mochica ruler.
Developed through a collaboration between PROMPERÚ and the Sipán Board of Trustees, the exhibition presents one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. Lambayeque artisans have recreated intricate royal ornaments and ceremonial objects, demonstrating the remarkable craftsmanship of both ancient and contemporary Peruvian cultures.
The exhibit features two mannequins designed by artist Edilberto Mérida Pilares, based on the facial features of modern Mochica descendants. Artisans Armando Gil, Segundo Gonzales, and Johnny Aldana have carefully reproduced stunning jewelry pieces that reflect the power and status of Mochica elite.
Peru's pavilion, operating under the theme "Infinite Possibilities," successfully communicates the nation's cultural, historical, and natural richness. The exhibition's significance extends beyond historical representation, serving as a powerful mechanism for strengthening national identity and presenting Peru's legacy to a global audience.
The exhibition's impact was further validated when the renowned publication Time Out recognized the Peru Pavilion as one of the top five international pavilions at Expo 2025, alongside Canada, the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines, and the Netherlands.
