UGI Utilities, Inc. will begin a comprehensive gas main replacement project in Allentown on March 12, targeting six streets in a multi-month infrastructure upgrade initiative. The project, expected to conclude by mid-July, represents a significant investment in modernizing the city's natural gas infrastructure.
The project will impact West Whitehall Street, North Emery Street, North Fair Street, North College Street, North Mohr Street, and North 4th Street. Construction will occur Monday through Friday from 7 am to 5 pm, potentially causing road closures, traffic disruptions, and temporary parking restrictions.
For local residents and businesses, the infrastructure upgrade presents a unique opportunity to convert to natural gas. While the project will temporarily interrupt gas service, UGI will conduct necessary equipment inspections and relight systems to ensure seamless transitions.
The infrastructure improvements underscore UGI's commitment to maintaining safe and reliable utility services. By replacing aging gas mains, the company aims to enhance system performance, reduce potential maintenance issues, and provide more consistent energy delivery to its nearly 760,000 customers.
Residents and businesses along the project routes should anticipate potential access and traffic challenges during construction. UGI recommends flexibility and patience during the upgrade process, which will ultimately contribute to improved utility infrastructure in the Allentown area.
